You found a photographer you love, booked a photo session, agreed on location, package etc. Now, the most important question on your mind is WHAT TO WEAR. If you have self-portrait photo session, the task of how to dress can be solved fairly quickly. But, what if you need to figure out what to wear for a family photo?!
What to wear depends on several factors: Is it an indoor or outdoor photo session? If it’s outdoors, what time of year is it? Summer clothes and colors are obviously different from winter outfits.
Here are simple DO’s and DON’Ts that will help you style your family for a successful photo shoot:
DO’s
• Wear well fitted clothes that complements your shape – not too loose and not too tight
• Color coordinate
• Keep it simple – stay with neutral colors (grey, beige, black, blue, brown)
• If choosing for a group – wear a similar clothing style, such us formal or informal, etc
• Consider color pallet that you like to see in your house (wall art, etc)
DON’Ts
• Avoid outfits with large patterns and logos
• Choose no more than 3 colors
• Don’t wear matchy-matchy outfits
• Don’t wear anything uncomfortable
For those who are up for a challenge and want to be a little more colorful and stand out – let’s dip into the task of wardrobe selection. The best way to solve the question on WHAT TO WEAR is to categorize.
STUDIO, INDOORS
Pick something that above all fits well. Whether it’s dressy or casual – pick 1 or 2 main colors. Consider your background colors – your house for a lifestyle session and backdrop color for studio portraits. Discuss your choice of wardrobe with your photographer. Again, and most importantly for studio and indoor photo sessions, It’s recommended to wear clothes without patterns and logos if possible. Studio and indoor portraits are all about the subject’s face and eyes. Busy pattern might act as a distraction from the main focus point.
SPRING
Spring is the perfect time to start playing with some color. Feel free to pick FRESH BRIGHT colors, such us Blush and Teal.
Or, maybe try Navy, Yellow and White. These colors will make your pictures stand out and pop from a background and bring it live.
Another way to go is to pick milder tones such as Blush and white, and maybe even add floral elements or acrocerids to the floral theme.
To achieve a classic and amazing look is easy with Light Blue, Tan, and White. These colors complement well anyone at any age as well as outdoor colors during spring time.
SUMMER
During summer, warm weather, beautiful outdoor scenery it’s best to focus not only on colors but also on textures of your cloth. Take advantage of the hot summer days and wear fluffy, light, maybe even sheer outfits.
Colors should be fun, bright and cheerful! Imagine yourself in combination of orange and teal colors.
Another summer color combination is blue, yellow green.
Not sure if super bright colors suites your taste – try blue and white.
Or, go with a classic look white and tan colors.
Another most favorite summer look includes coral color in it. Color, White and Tan or maybe even touch of blue. There are endless possibilities!
